Located in the surf town of Seagrove Beach, The Surfing Deer pays homage to one Cube McGee, an innovator and local legend in terms of developing the diminutive coastal community. Ol’ Cube McGee was also known to frolic near the surf with his pet deer named Bambi, and that is how the name of the restaurant came about. The Surfing Deer is open daily and the kitchen presents a little bit of everything on the menu; there is even a menu for the little ones.
Modern Menu
On the menu, the section entitled To Graze offers selections such as crispy calamari, lobster tacos and royal red shrimp served in a tomato bisque. However, the most visually appealing is the Clothesline Bacon, which places thick pieces of smoked bacon on a mini clothesline complete with clothespins; it comes with summer peas, buttermilk biscuits, pickled peach and torched rosemary. The To Peck section of the menu has items like curried cauliflower, Brussels sprout Caesar salad, watermelon caprese salad and an excellent version of Louisiana-style gumbo. The section entitled To Feast includes heartier dishes such as the Snapper Imperial served with yellow curry and jasmine rice or the Seafood Acadiana prepared with tons of fresh seafood. On the kids’ menu, the kitchen does not disappoint; in fact, the little ones have their choice of a Surf N’ Turf option which includes petite filet mignon and grilled shrimp.
Lively Libations
The Surfing Deer presents a nice mix of cocktails, beer and wine where each palate is well represented, from sparkling rosés and scintillating ciders to impressive IPAs and bold Barolos. On the Deerly Mixed cocktail menu, the Skinny Thyme Mule made with cucumber and agave stands out beyond the typical Moscow Mule, while the Cube McGee is an adventurous drink prepared with bourbon, smoked maple syrup, bitters, citrus and blackberry. The beer selections include a varied array of local cans as well as a few domestic and imported ones.
